Butterflies of Dandenong

One of the most common butterflies in this area is the Common Brown – but the male and female are different! The female is slightly larger than the male and the wing pattern is different.

Another brown butterfly with a slightly different pattern of rings and smaller size is the Ringed Xenica.

The Australian Painted Lady has some prominent white patches within the brown.

The Wood White is much less common and is strikingly colourful.

The Imperial Jezebel is also uncommon. Can you see the differences to the Wood White?

The Swordgrass Brown is quite rare now, so plant some of its food plant, red-fruit saw-sedge or Gahnia sieberiana, in your garden.

The Imperial Hairstreak is another butterfly with very specific requirements. It needs acacia plants to feed on, and also a particular species of rainbow ants within the tree.
